Candidate selection: The choice before the choice

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented of the methods of candidate-selection for elections in various democracies across the world. Since candidate-selection is very significant for a political party and is representative of the party, the presence of several selectorates within the party is advisable for selection of the candidate, as this system fosters checks and balances in the democracy, with the diffusion of authority among several selectorates preventing the concentration of power.

The catholic wave

Article Abstract:

Long wary of the modern state as such, the Roman Catholic Church became a champion of democratic government around the time of Vatican II, and helped to set off the Third Wave of democratization. The catholic wave roused in Portugal and Spain, surged across Latin America, carried democracy to the Philippines and crested in Poland with the first of several East European revolution against communism.

The anti-American century

Article Abstract:

The era after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, is well recalled as 'the anti-American century' but it appears that the twenty-first may be dominated by anti-Americanism, an all purpose ideology that poses a serious obstacle to the progress of democracy. Anti-Americanism 'lite' and murderous anti-Americanism are the two basic types of anti-Americanism discussed.
