China: a report from the top

Article Abstract:

The US's world view is a balance of the 19th- and the 20th-century world views which is a combination of working for mutual benefit and strengthening one's position opposite the other. In his recent trip to China, Anthony Lake presented to Chinese Pres. Ziang Jemin and Premier Li Peng how this world view works as a force of stability in the region. He also made clear that although US has a one-China policy, this will be affected by an attack on Taiwan. Lake's assessment of the situation is that although there will be no massive breakthroughs, there could be some improvements.
