Clinton's conventional arms export policy: so little change

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration's new conventional arms export policy believes that the sale of US-made arms will help its allies, deter aggression and foster regional stability. The policy mirrors those adopted by both the Reagan and Bush administrations and contradicts Pres. Bill Clinton's campaign platform. Clinton's policy reversal could be explained by the commercialization of the arms industry, coupled by strong pressures from the US defense industry.

Clinton signs arms sales directive, dashing hopes for reduced transfers

Article Abstract:

The signing of a traditional arms transfer policy on February 17, 1995 by president Bill Clinton confirmed his administration's support for high levels of American arms sales. This will maintain the country's predominance in the international markets. The signing came as a disappointment to all those who were hoping that the U.S. administration would place significant checks on arms transfers.

A 'new' approach to the small arms trade

Article Abstract:

A conference of world governments to be held in July 2001 in New York will focus on the international illicit trade in light weapons and small arms. However, it is unclear whether the conference is merely a public relations exercise or whether it will lead to positive action in the short term.
