Contractualist liberalism and deliberative democracy

Article Abstract:

Contractualist liberalism and deliberative democracy are two different views on democracy. According to contractualists, the social contract provides a powerful model of political and moral understanding. The government should ensure freedom of speech, conscience and assembly; the freedom of the press; and the right to vote and to hold political office. Deliberative democracy, as a model, advocates the ideal of democratic deliberation in which participants are free and equal. Its features are the promotion of public good, equality of political opportunities and power, and the ability to influence the psychology of citizens.

Liberal citizenship and the search for an overlapping consensus: The case of Muslim minorities

Article Abstract:

The issue of what political liberalism demands of Muslim citizens living as minorities in liberal states by way of a doctrinal affirmation of citizenship is discussed. It is learnt that political liberalism is a self-conscious doctrine concerned about the conditions of its reception, stability prospects and being fair to nonliberal citizens.
