Non-governmental organizations and the original international trade regime

Article Abstract:

The inclusion and position of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the World Trade Organization (WTO) can be arranged based on the system planned for the International Trade Organization (ITO) that was never implemented. The ITO was supposed to benefit from the experience and knowledge of NGOs through cooperation and consultations while NGO participation was expected to strengthen the ITO. The ITO's plan should be used to organize the WTO and any attempts to resist NGO involvement are not founded in implementation problems but rather in opposition to NGO influence.

The WTO and civil society

Article Abstract:

The association of the World Trade Organization (WTO) with civil society can either have positive or negative benefits for global trade. Based on an analysis of interchanges between the group and the WTO, it is projected that such contacts will further increase in the future. Thus, it would be to the benefit of the two parties if their working relationship can maximize benefits and minimize pitfalls. By clarifying and specifying objectives and then, taking steps to improve relations and staff capacities between the WTO and civil society, a fruitful exchange will ensue.
