Curbing corruption in Venezuela

Article Abstract:

Venezuela's problem of corruption is being tackled in a number of ways by a group called Agrupacion Pro Calidad. Identifying the problem as a cultural phenomenon, the group has sought to change the social attitudes of the people through anti-corruption workshops. Four varieties of corruption are systemic corruption, bribery, fraud, and judicial corruption. Selecting honest and capable employees and rewarding them, prosecuting the corrupt, improving information systems, minimizing the discretionary power of the bureaucrats, and assuming leadership roles are ways to control the evil.

China's surge of corruption

Article Abstract:

Chinese intellectuals and renowned scientists, in a petition submitted in February and May 1995, have dared to demand tolerance, democratic reforms, and action against official corruption in China. The spurt in corruption is due to the rapid economic development in a party dominated country, where there is little difference between markets and official power. The definition of corruption and it's trends are the two major problems. State, society and order; revival of market; the corruption-reform connection; changing conceptions of corruption are also discussed.

Combatting corruption around the world

Article Abstract:

Corruption has become a major problem in many countries. Instead of tolerating this attitude, people can coalesce into groups devoted to promoting transparency in government. Such groups should articulate the people's disgust with corruption and inform the citizenry of corruption's adverse effects on social, economic and political development. Countries which have actively promoted citizen involvement in combatting corruption include those in eastern Europe and Ecuador.
