Developing a philosophically grounded alternative to capitalism

Article Abstract:

The failure of much revolution to surmount the problems associated with capitalism, racism and sexual and national oppression had resulted in developing a vision of a non-capitalist society, even though the idea of revolution has receded from public discourse. Though the spontaneous mass struggles often suggest the elements of a new society, the task of working out a comprehensive vision of non-capitalist social relations takes theoretical labor requiring more than spontaneous activity.

Boris Kagarlitsky on capitalization in the Soviet Union: paradoxes, difficulties and resistance

Article Abstract:

Boris Kagarlitsky attributes the current pro-capitalist fervor among intellectuals and journalists in the former USSR to the notion of Western capitalism as utopian. During the 1960s, consumer affluence was seen as the main objective of social progress. Hence, images of well-stocked supermarkets characterize the ideal society. The idea that Third World poverty results from a lack of capitalism has also been inculcated in the public mind.
