Lobbying success in the United States and the European Union

Article Abstract:

A new way of measuring lobbying success is introduced and a model of its determinants is laid, in the scenario where studying interest group influence is avoided because of the difficulty in operationalising the concept. The institutional differences suggest winner-take -all outcomes biased in favor of wealthier business interests while lack of these institutional characteristics leads to more balanced policy compromises with more advocates achieving some of their policy goals.

Europe from the bottom: Assessing personal gains and losses and its effects on EU support

Article Abstract:

A clear division between lower social strata and higher social strata in terms of winning and losing in Europeanization is presented to show how Europeans rate the integration process as it affects and how it influences the support for integration. The findings show that socio-economic characteristics cannot explain people's perceptions of being winners or losers and almost half of the European Union population regard themselves as neither winners nor losers.

The political costs of policy coherence: Constructing a rural policy for Scotland

Article Abstract:

The question of whether more coherence in one area comes at the cost of incoherence elsewhere is explored. A case study is presented of the Scottish Executive's projection of a unified rural policy, with the reality of a persistent Scottish agricultural sector, with contending publics with separate and often conflicting agendas.
