Diabebetes in African Americans is more frequent in older persons, females, the less educated, those with lower incomes and inner city residents

Article Abstract:

People must know about diabetes to be able to regulate or prevent its occurence. Statistics show that diabetes infects more Afro-Americans than white Americans and its incidence in Afro-Americans has increased in the last two decades. Diabetes develops when the body's insulin production is inadequate or the insulin produced is defective. Glucose is retained in the blood thereby increasing the blood sugar level. A diabetic and his family can cope with the disease given the proper knowledge and understanding of its nature and treatment.

AIDS & African-Americans: it's time for action

Article Abstract:

The spread of AIDS to the colored community is a matter of concern for African-Americans because very little notice is given to it. Preventing the spread of AIDS depend largely on education and adequate resources made available to both the poorer sector and upper sectors of society. Sports stars Magic Johnson and Arthur Ashe have helped to spread awareness for AIDS and its prevention by committing themselves to the cause. The way to take individual action against AIDS is to be informed, involved and clear about values concerning sex.

AIDS and African-Americans: it's time for action

Article Abstract:

Afro-Americans must act on AIDS prevention programs immediately if the community is to stop the increasing rate of infection among black women. Since AIDS is a preventable disease, practices which increase the chances of contamination should be reformed. These practices include stopping the practice of casual, unprotected sex as well as substance abuse. AIDS is transmitted through sexual contact and contaminated needles.
