Edwin Arlington Robinson: Tilbury Town revisited

Article Abstract:

Poet Edwin Arlington Robinson was a famous poet during the early part of the 20th century but has largely been forgotten in the 1990s largely because his meticulously metrical style and didactic intent are no longer considered fashionable. Much modern poetry is formless and strewn with images that have been haphazardly woven into the content. Robinson represented an era where expert craftsmanship, as opposed to spurt of inspiration, and clarity, as opposed to intentional vagueness, were considered important. Robinson's works, nonetheless, remain valuable examples of timeless poetry.

To Mr. Schaefer con amore

Article Abstract:

The influence of the first music teacher, Ferdinand Schaefer, is described. Violin lessons began at the age of the age of ten and continued for 12 years, while the friendship lasted for 40 years. Schaefer himself had studied in Leipzig, Germany, and had a distinguished musical career. He taught many lessons, such as patience, perseverance, preparation, performance, precision, punctuality, respect, competence, and responsibility, some having to do with music, some having to do with life.

The work of poet and novelist Thomas Hardy straddles the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His naturalism made him the target of negative and often severe criticism, but he was seen as the master of the English novel of his era.
