The demolition of double standards

Article Abstract:

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee belies allegations that his government was quick to conduct nuclear tests because he had only been installed for 50 days. He argues that the nuclear tests were necessary to ensure India's national security and to let other countries know that the country has a credible deterrent against possible aggression. He also took other countries to task for criticizing India's decision to undertake nuclear tests when they themselves have nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, he reiterated India's position that it is in favor of comprehensive nuclear disarmament.

What Islamic bomb?

Article Abstract:

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif insists that his country's decision to conduct nuclear tests is based on a desire to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He sees the nuclear tests as a means to maintain the global strategic balance as far as nuclear programs are concerned, although he implies that there is sufficient evidence pointing to a possible attack of Pakistan's nuclear installations by India. Despite Pakistan's controversial nuclear testing, Sharif expressed willingness to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty provided India will do the same.

The mother of all gambles

Article Abstract:

India's claim that the main reason for its decision to conduct nuclear tests is to shore up its deteriorating security environment is deeply misguided. This is because there is no hard evidence to prove that the country's security environment is suffering from years of neglect. In fact, national security has improved marginally and there is no reason to believe that an immediate threat from other countries exists. The nuclear tests can be viewed as a veiled attempt by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to discourage, if not eliminate, opposition to his administration.
