Environmental action during Romania's early transition years

Article Abstract:

Defective environmental policies were the source of environmental problems which confront the Romanian government in the midst of its economic and political transition. Considerable improvements have been achieved by an ecological movement during the last years of Communism. Furthermore, the economic slow-down contributed to the reduction of the amount of environmental degradation which has been incurred. With the assistance coming from foreign sources, Romania is achieving progress in its efforts to improve its environmental policies and in managing environmental problems.

Rejecting green velvet: transition, environment and nationalism in Slovakia

Article Abstract:

Environmental issues were the primary catalyst in the transformation of Slovakia. This is exemplified by the dominant role played by the green leaders in the 'velvet revolution' in 1989. However, the current lack of interest for environmental concerns reflects that the initial enthusiasm was not deeply rooted in the people's value system. This also indicates that the transition is not toward the achievement of sustainable development, rather the continuity of the Communist model of industrial development.
