Four-headed dragon

Article Abstract:

Official US papers on the future of Iraq demonstrate a casual, imprudent spirit that has sent shock waves through those less complacent and more thoughtful about the reality there. It is suggested that four 'isms' will overshadow everything else once the initial bout of military conflict in Iraq is concluded, but that little attention is being paid to them. These isms will be tribalism, anti-secular clericalism or fundamentalist Islamism, extremism, and nationalism. Of these, fundamentalism and tribalism have the potential to dwarf everything else and cause the most problems.

Beyond the law

Article Abstract:

An examination of where the line should be drawn between war and law enforcement in the fight against terrorism is made in the light of three separate actions by the US: (1) the detention without trial or charge of an alleged terrorist in Chicago; (2) the killing of an Al Qaeda suspect in Yemen; and (3) the flouting of a judicial order against the removal of terrorist suspects from Bosnia. Efforts are made to ascertain when suspects should be brought up for trial in the criminal justice system and when it is appropriate to simply track them down and kill them.

Opening options

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the various arguments for and against war in Iraq. It is suggested that of these arguments, four - represented by the British and French governments, and the traditional 'realists' and ideologues, or neo-conservatives, within the US government - require reconciliation if international legitimacy and the UN are to be preserved and the people of Iraq are to see a better future.
