From Zaire to the Congo: (change of leadership in Zaire)

Article Abstract:

The fall of Mobutu Sese Seko from power in Zaire signals an opportunity for independence and democracy to reign not only in Zaire but on the whole African continent. This opportunity hinges on a peaceful transition of power which is currently being held by Laurent Kabila until democratic processes leading to an elected government are instituted. However, Kabila should first focus on rehabilitating the country rather than on creating a multi-party democracy.

Time to stop a genocide culture

Article Abstract:

Fighting between Tutsi minority and Hutu majority forces in Burundi may destabilize the central region of Africa. Military control of both Burundi and neighboring Rwanda may enforce order in the short term, but policies to develop a sound democratic government are needed for the long term. Observer missions from international organizations do little to promote law and order. A solution is called for to end genocide of either group.

The Tutsi-trigger: redrawing Africa's colonial map

Article Abstract:

The solution to the Tutsi question in Rwanda, Zaire and Burundi cannot be settled by creating separate states for the warring tribes. This would only lead to intermittent interstate wars. A federation of the three countries into a larger, democratic political community would make a better solution.
