US foreign policy and the environment: engagement for the next century

Article Abstract:

One of the important areas of US foreign policy is global environmental degradation such as climate change and ozone depletion. These threats pose serious economic, health and quality of life implications for the US. Multilateral negotiations to produce international agreements are important in solving environmental problems. This should be complemented by regional institutions, traditional diplomacy or bilateral negotiations, full integration within governments and finally, cooperation from the private sector.

Forging new alliances in Ecuador's Amazon

Article Abstract:

Ecuador's oil exploration in the Amazon region has met with resistance from indigenous groups, leading to a major environmental controversy. The early phase of exploration caused ecological degradation with oil dumping, contamination of the river system and deforestation, threatening the Amazon Indians' cultural and physical survival. Indians organized with help from non-governmental organizations and convinced the World Bank to incorporate environmental criteria for providing loans to Ecuador.

The new activism in Turkish foreign policy

Article Abstract:

Controversies surround Turkish Pres Turgut Ozal's declaration that Turkey should abandon its former passive and hesitant policies and engage in an active foreign policy. The declaration, which supported the anti-Iraq coalition effort, was believed to be a virtue made of necessity. Ozal was sure that his country had realized a new phase in its development that permitted it to support a more forceful position and stance in international affairs.
