From hegemony to pluralism: the changing politics of the Black Sea

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the end of the Cold War have changed the power structure in the Black Sea region from a closed system to an open system of international relations between various political entities. However, the transformation also resulted in new instabilities such as rifts between Ukraine and Russia, and between Turkey and Russia. The pluralism that pervades the region can only be safeguarded by the West playing the role of mediator for neither Turkey nor Ukraine can fulfill this role.
