Further up the learning curve: NGOs from transition to Brussels

Article Abstract:

The accession countries of central and Eastern Europe are under obligation to harmonize with European Union (EU) environmental directives thereby increasing difficulty of domestic NGOs. However, EU membership advantages NGOs to play the role of watchdog for implementing EU-consistent domestic environmental laws.

An analysis of European Union (EU) programs and accession practices on performance and environmental policies in central and Eastern Europe is discussed. Pace of economic, political, and environmental reforms has accelerated and their scope in post-socialist Europe has broadened.
