Greece's institutional response to sustainable development

Article Abstract:

Greece has been hindered by strategic, structural and procedural obstacles in its efforts to develop environmental policies that are in line with the principle of sustainable economic development. This is manifested in the fragmentation of the country's institutional efforts at sustainable development, the bid for economic convergence with northern European countries and the absence of a noteworthy environmental movement in the country. Factors that may stimulate long-term sustainable development include widespread environmental degradation affecting economic goals.

Towards sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean: policy and practice in Italy, Spain and Greece

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) has helped to promote sustainable development with its 5th Environmental Action Program (EAP) begun in 1992. Greece, Spain and Italy have come to see tourism as under threat from degradation of the environment. This perception has stimulated change, rather than the actions of the EU, where less expertise on tourism has been developed. Policy has tended to focus on tourism, and to see tourism as interacting with the environment, rather than focusing on wider issues.

Environmental policy in Greece: evolution, structures and process

Article Abstract:

The Greek policy on environment is problematic and is strongly influenced by the inheritance of serious environmental degradation and political, administrative, economic and cultural continuities. The environmental problems of Greece and the reason for their continuation have to be assessed by taking into account its membership in EU and the unique structure of Greek internal politics and policy making processes.
