The role of international intervention in facilitating violence and peace in El Salvador, 1977-1998

This article examines the impact globalization had on state repression, political violence, and human rights violations that swept El Salvador between 1975 and 1985. The author argues that while the United States contributed to the violations through its financial and military support of the repressive government, the United Nations and the Organization of American States were significant players in the advancement of peace.politic

Political will and public trust: El Salvador's Procurator for the Defense of Human Rights and the dilemmas of institution-building

Article Abstract:

This article examines the history and development of El Salvador' office of the Procurator for the Defense of Human Rights, a product of the 1992 Peace Accords. The office, developed to address human rights complaints and suppress state authority abuses, is currently facing the threat of marginalization due to lack of external funding and proper leadership.

Indigenous rights in El Salvador: Prospects for change

Article Abstract:

The Leftist Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN) party received 53 percent of EI Salvador's vote in the presidential elections for the year 1997. The FMLN is poised to take control of the country but have a number of obstacles, which include the effects of 'coffee oligarchy', that effectively ruled EI Salvador for almost a century.
