Has democracy failed ecology? An ecofeminist perspective

Article Abstract:

The failure of democracy to deal with ecological problems is due to the increasing disparity between social groups in liberal democracies. Inequitable distribution of privileges and ecological ills by the socially dominant creates rigidities that restrict the capacity for correctiveness that is otherwise inherent in a democracy. Therefore, liberal democracy is responsible for the failure of both democracy and ecology. A radical democracy that reinforces and diffuses moral responsibility toward the environment and does away with liberalism is suggested.

The fabulous four go green

Article Abstract:

'Social Theory and the Environment' touches on the works of European social theorists Anthony Giddens, Andre Gorz, Jurgen Habermas and Ulrich Beck to determine the contributions of social theory to environmental politics. Author David Goldblatt examines the social and structural origins of environmental degradation together with the political and cultural conditions under which public concern may be mobilized against the issue. He used the Marxian tradition to study environmental politics within the context of socialism.
