Hungary and the European Community - a West European view

Article Abstract:

Hungary and the other Visegrad countries deserve EC membership. Western Europe's primary foreign policy goal should be the maintenance of peace and stability in the region, and history teaches that EC membership enhances new members' domestic and political stability. Such membership would be a more effective way of enhancing European security than a larger NATO. This membership would also have to insist on improved human rights for ethnic minorities in these countries. A transitional membership would have to be devised to allow these countries to catch up to the West economically.
