Hungary: political transformation and environmental challenge

Article Abstract:

The economic and political transformation in Hungary has consequently altered the context by which environmental concerns are addressed. Specifically, environmental policy and administration are major challenges that confront the limited institutional capacity of the ruling administration. The democratization of the political system is anticipated to only result in making the management of environmental concerns more difficult. However, this is perceived as a significant prerequisite in achieving improvement in the effort to manage environmental problems.

The state and environmental challenges: a critical exploration of alternatives to the state-system

Article Abstract:

The state's response to the environmental issues has been criticized giving rise to two schools of thought advocating the creation of a world-government and advocating decentralization of power at the national level. Although they show themselves as radically departing from state-centric thinking, they in fact emphasize the centrality of the state institution by relying on the ability of government to solve environmental problems.
