A high-efficiency electromechanical battery

Article Abstract:

Demand for cost-effective ways to store electrical energy is increasing. Electrochemical (E-C) cells could supply these needs, but they have well-known limitations. The electromechanical battery (EMB), a modular unit consisting of an evacuated housing with a fiber-composite rotor, provides an alternative. The rotor, which is supported by magnetic bearings, contains an integrally mounted permanent magnet array. The development of high-strength fibers in permanent-magnet materials, and new solid-state power electronics technologies provide new possibilities, including the design of small modular EMBs for full- or hybrid-electric vehicles and larger modules for stationary storage needs. Design issues for EMBs with rotors consisting of nested cylinders are discussed, including rotational stability, stress distributions, generator/motor power and efficiency, power conversion and cost. EMB could provide a five-fold reduction in the energy input required for electric automobiles.

Jury-bashing and the O.J. Simpson verdict

Article Abstract:

The public response to the O.J. Simpson verdict was simply the latest example in a long tradition of jury-bashing. A proposal to do away with the unanimity requirement in California was promoted by Fred Goldman, father of Ronald Goldman, one of the murder victims in the Simpson case, although the proposal had no evident relationship to the case. The jury in the Simpson case was criticized for reaching a decision too quickly, but deliberation would certainly not be prolonged by eliminating the unanimity requirement. Abolishing peremptory challenges is not a good idea either without a better standard for challenges with cause.
