Keeping the faith in neutrality?

Article Abstract:

Ireland was actively reexamining its policy of military neutrality, and considering participation in NATO's Partnership for Peace program, as well as its role in the European Union's military arm, the Western European Union. The Jun 1996 general election results and increasing tension over Northern Ireland have, however, impeded those plans for the short term. The Fianna Fail party, major partner in the new government, strictly favors the maintenance of neutrality. The government itself is devoting nearly all its foreign policy efforts to restarting the stalled peace process in Northern Ireland.
