Kosovo: round one to Serbia

Article Abstract:

Kosovo, the southern part of the former Yugoslavia, has become a focal point of the Balkan conflict. Kosovo has moved back and forth throughout history between Serbia and Albania, and the area's population is between 85 and 90% ethnic Albanian. Zeljko Raznjatovic-Arkan, a paramilitary leader, won election as leader of the Kosovo Serbs in late 1992. Arkan is in favor of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and is much more radical than the Serbian government in Belgrade. Neither the Albanian government nor the government-in-exile of the Albanian Kosovars has had much effect on the conflict.

Nationalist renewal

Article Abstract:

The renewal of nationalism in Serbia is an indication of the failure of post-conflict governments to resolve long-standing problem with the economy, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at The Hague, and the future of Kosovo and Montenegro. This is the fourth attempt by Serbs to elect a president after previous failures because less than half of those eligible voted.

Nation in waiting

Article Abstract:

The Kosovo parliament and President Ibrahim Rugova still feel that Kosovo is already independent and is only waiting for the world to accept the fact. There was no effect of the arrests of several ex-Kosovo Liberation Army figures and their departure to the International Tribunal in the Hague on the Kosovo Albanian public opinion about the validity of the war and desire for nationhood.
