Merkel's momentum

Article Abstract:

Germany has begun to mend relationships with its key partners, especially the US and the UK, since Angela Merkel's victory in the federal elections in September 2005 and the formation of a grand coalition government with the Social Democratic Party. The Chancellor Angela Merkel's role in brokering a budget deal among the European Union (EU) member states at the closing summit of the British European Council Presidency in December 2005, her successful visits to the US and tougher line in Russia and China have attracted most international attention.

Two more for the club

Article Abstract:

Bulgaria and Romania are scheduled to join the European Union (EU) on January 1, 2007, but the run-up to the final approval for accession highlights several concerns for both existing and prospective members. The expansion of the EU is however significant for the new entrants because it signals acceptance as modern functioning European democracies and offers the prospect of greater economic and political stability and security, and for the EU because it concludes the process of eastern enlargement launched by leaders in 1993.
