Miracle turns into nightmare

Article Abstract:

The Asian economic crisis has shaken beliefs in nationalism and unity promoted by the governments and trade organizations, threatening the social and political relations between ethnic groups in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. The economic decline has weakened regional consensus with the proliferation of political parties, destabilized authoritarian regimes, and has led to attacks on the region's economically powerful Chinese minorities.

Can tigers change their stripes?

Article Abstract:

Traditional orthodoxy about East Asian economic growth has been challenged by collapsing business groups, increasing organized crime, and declining bank liquidity. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), established in 1966, developed a code of conduct for regional order and interstate relations that members rarely followed. Threats to economic well-being may cause ASEAN to come apart, beginning in Indonesia.
