NAACP Chairman Gibson moves Convention with call for National Summit

Article Abstract:

NAACP Chairman Dr. Willaim F. Gibson called upon Afro-American communities to put an end to racial and ethnic discontent and assist in the task of nation building. Gibson, in his address during the 83rd NAACP Convention, held in 1992 at Nashville, TN, condemned the 1992 Los Angeles riots as a socially destructive act, and urged the black community to end violence. He persuaded them, instead, to adopt a peaceful stand and to fight against the problem of unemployment as well as lack of housing, medical care and educational facilities.

NAACP files suit: challenging Maryland's new redistricting plan

Article Abstract:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed a suit in the federal court against the state of Maryland. The suit challenges and questions the legality of the redistricting plan for the General Assembly. NAACP claims the plan violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and minimizes representation in Congress for minority groups and Afro-Americans. The plan is seen as a violation of the Voting Rights Act because it denies equitable voting power for minorities and Afro-Americans.
