On monopoly power and fixed markups

Article Abstract:

Amitava Krishna Dutt presented an economic paradigm that tried to combine an alternative monopoly markup price formation model with a classical prices of production model. Analysis of Dutt's model would reveal that it is unrealistic. The model implies that neither the firm wishing entry into the market nor the incumbent are not motivated by profit, that markups are determined by factors other than competition and that the degree of monopoly does not change as new firms enter the market. These assumptions do not conform to the real market situation.

A case of mistaken identities

Article Abstract:

Teaching African history in Britain involves issues of identity and culture. Some students would not read the literature recommended for the course on the grounds that it was Eurocentric, and they were of African descent so had no need for such books. Academic colleagues have found similar problems, though they tend to be dealt with on an individual basis. The idea of identity became oversimplified, and the conflict was affected by the wider political context.
