Robert Nisbet and the modern state

Article Abstract:

A centralized bureaucratic power poses a threat to social development, according to Robert Nisbet. While the centralized state imposes taxes on the population to cover its high material costs, it ignores the true sense of community that encompasses a sense of purpose and continuity. Nisbet advocates plurality and decentralization, which promote cultural autonomy and spontaneity. His books 'The Quest for Community,' 'Twilight of Authority' and 'Present Age' focus on the threat of bureaucratized sovereign state, the decay of Western politics, and growth of government and federalism in the US.

Christianity, modern liberalism, and J. Gresham Machen

Article Abstract:

Presbyterian theologian Gresham Machen was a major advocate for a historical Christianity that made him a precursor of the fundamentalist movement which opposed liberal notions of Christianity that emphasized good works and moralism. Machen believed that orthodox doctrines of salvation and the nature of Christ were endangered by American culture and liberals' pursuit of a Christian society.

Reassessing the modern era

Article Abstract:

'The Malaise of Modernity' proposes a theory of modernity that is neither positive nor negative. Charles Taylor criticizes the other theories of modernity, and supports the view that there is a desire for 'authenticity' in modern society. The book is divided into ten chapters, each dealing with various aspects of modernity.
