Sandeels, sailors, sandals and suits: the strategy pf the environmental movement in relation to the fishing industry

Article Abstract:

Environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) are increasingly involved in issues relating to commercial fishing. This is illustrated by three case studies. The first is a campaign by Greenpeace against fishing for sandeels near the Scottish coast. The second relates to the involvement of ENGOs in a North Sea Conference ministerial meeting, and the third to the develop of an ecolabeling system indicating sustainable fishing practices. This interest of ENGOs in fishing is likely to persist, with a range of strategies being employed. There has been some success in increasing awareness of environmental issues relating to fishing, and in reaching a compromise in the European Union between fishers and environmentalists.

The common fisheries policy of the European Union

Article Abstract:

Problems with implementing the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) arise from its inadequacy of addressing fishing subsidies regulation and overfishing. CFP critics also charge that the policy remains unequal in determining and implementing special fishing rights and that the policy could influence the outcome of the 20-year review in 2002.
