Facing South? British environmental movement organizations and the challenge of globalization

Article Abstract:

The diverse ways in which the three environmental movement organizations (EMOs), Friends of the Earth (FoE), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Greenpeace have responded to the challenges of an emergent transnational agenda centered on issues of justice for global south is described. The constellation of organizations and campaigns that is increasingly called the global justice movement (GJM) is explained.

The 1997 British general election

Article Abstract:

The 1997 general election in the UK resulted in a landslide victory for the Labour Party and an overwhelming defeat for the Conservatives since 1979. The Green Party failed to gain seats in the parliament as it only acquired 65,997 of the total number of votes cast. Due to the weakness of the green Party, groups such as Real World and Friends of the Earth lobbied for environmental issues among the major parties.

Article Abstract:

The article examines the influence of the Green Party on Britain's Labour Party in the 2001 general election, and the resultant shift of Labour toward environmentalism. It is posited that environmentalism has a more secure place in future UK policy-making than it did prior to the election.
