Senegal: the return of personalism

Article Abstract:

The victory of the Senegalese Democratic Party's leader Abdoulaye Wade in 2000 after 40 years of the Socialist Party rule was seen as a means for democratic consolidation in Senegal. But the optimism has worn off as his administration has only marked an undesirable return to autocracy, patrimonialism and personalism.

Ethnicity and political crisis in Cote d'Ivoire

Article Abstract:

Cote d'Ivoire was one of Africa's most stable countries until a military coup in 1999. Flawed, violence-ridden elections in 2000 demonstrate the challenges the nation faces in dealing with ethnic chauvinism and xenophobia.
