Socialist societies and the emancipation of women: the case of Cuba

Article Abstract:

The decline of socialism in many countries has given an opportunity to look back in time and analyse its role in social transformation, especially in relation to women. Cuba is one of the few socialist countries which has gone ahead towards ensuring equality between the sexes and maintaining its socialist principles. Cuban women, taking the opportunity of improving their condition, participated actively in struggle for revolution. A Federation of Cuban Women was formed as an effort toward this aim. Cuban resistance to the pressure from the US owes largely to women's determination.
