Strategic trade theory in the context of small, less developed countries: some considerations

Article Abstract:

Lesser developed countries (LDCs) may never experience true free trade since government subsidies for large oligopolistic firms promote shifting of profits from foreign to domestic companies. LDCs can benefit from this new form of trade by forming joint ventures of business with either foreign capital or government support. Selective protection rather than wide open borders or full protectionism can enhance the profit-raising potential of LDC companies.
