The Russian predicament

Article Abstract:

Semipresidentialism became the modal constitution of the postcommunist world and seemed to promise the best of all constitutional worlds. Many countries like Russia that chose semipresidentialism rapidly turned into the predicament of semipresidentialism as it began to pose serious design dilemmas and facilitated democratic backsliding rather than democratic consolidation.

Pakistan's predicament

Article Abstract:

The author assesses Pakistan's military government under Pervez Musharraf, and concludes that although the regime is not as repressive than international observers had expected, it nevertheless has failed so far to address the problems that led to the collapse of democracy in the country, such as corruption.

A wake-up call in Afghanistan

Article Abstract:

The article describes the resurgence of the Taliban movement as a useful, but delayed wake-up call to those concerned that all is not well with Afghanistan and that international efforts there are misplaced in some cases and inadequate in others although there is a namesake democracy there.
