The case of George Bernanos

Article Abstract:

Conservative writer George Bernanos often considered men who sacrifice their personal pursuits for greater causes in his works. French political portraiture is a history of opposites wherein kings stand with scoundrels, heroes with hypocrites and saints with fools. A similar issue stands between virtues and vices within an individual, as portrayed by Bernanos in his literary works.French Jacobin state stands historically as identical to tyrannical regimes of Hitler and Stalin, yet Bernanos had a different view of that state.

Charles Maurras, shaper of an age

Article Abstract:

Anti-democratic thinker Charles Maurras, who lived between 1868 and 1952, presented a Mediterranean worldview in which Greeks and Latins intermingle. The classical spirit is a very strong element in Maurrassian literature, and he regarded the Greek ideal as the sign of perfection and a form of inner clock. His opponents have misunderstood, often deliberately, his anti-Semitism and early anti-Catholicism. In fact, his later poems present a humble conversion, and a pope identified him as a significant champion of the Church.
