The future of U.S. nuclear weapons policy

Article Abstract:

The US should adopt a two-part programme to make changes to its nuclear weapons policies, according to a report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). It should decide upon a short- and medium-term set of force reductions in order to reduce the risk of further confrontation. It should also make long-term efforts to encourage international conditions in which the possession of nuclear weapons would no longer be seen as necessary or acceptable. This approach would reduce nuclear dangers without negatively affecting other US security interests.

NDP report says wait on NMD, but not on nuclear reductions

Article Abstract:

A National Defense Panel report concludes that Russia and the US should drive forward the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty III programme at maximum speed. The report, called Transforming Defense: National Security in the 21st Century, stresses a need for reduced risk from nuclear attack. It calls for a reduction in nuclear weapons stockpiles and advises the US to press Russia to commit to the strategic arms reduction treaty II programme.

NMD system achieves first intercept; U.S. clarifies ABM negotiating position

Article Abstract:

The proposed US national missile defense (NMD) program successfully intercepted an ICBM target in early October. A modified Minuteman ICBM was launched and destroyed by a prototype NMD kill vehicle. The test was denounced by Russia which criticized US efforts to seek amendments to the ABM Treaty that would allow for the deployment of an NMD system.
