The new liberalism: trade policy in emerging markets

Article Abstract:

The trade policy changes, called the "new liberalism," in the emerging economies since the 1980s were identified and evaluated. The study showed that with their adoption of liberal economic policies, the emerging economies will benefit from their membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The liberal policies will lead to direct and indirect welfare gains, while their commitments to the Uruguay Round and membership to the WTO will help the emerging economies minimize the risk of possible future trade policy reversals.
