The new political activism in Africa

Article Abstract:

Political shifts in Africa during the early 1990s made possible the formation of new nonpartisan organizations, encouraging women to run for office. Women's contributions to African politics include opposing corruption and sectarianism, constitution making, and improving women's legal status.

Cultural obstacles to equal representation

Article Abstract:

Review of over 170 countries shows women's political representation cannot be explained only in terms of political institutions and socioeconomic factors. Research suggests the nature of national political culture is also a significant factor.
