The paradoxes of environmental policy in Eastern Europe: the dynamics of policy-making in the Czech Republic

Article Abstract:

A environmental policy process in the erstwhile communist states of Eastern Europe has continued to progress under adverse political conditions. The states have made progress in drafting effective environmental policies despite the low priority accorded to environmental issues in domestic politics. Czech legislations, such as the Act on Environmental Impact Assessment and the Clean Air Act demonstrate the state's adoption of tough Environmental regulations despite the lack of public and political pressure. However, the implementation of these measures may prove problematic.

Patterns of environmental movements in Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

A study of environmental and housing movements in Russia, Estonia and Hungary has given a valuable insight into patterns of environmental movements in Eastern Europe during the transition from state socialism. There has been a significant rise and fall in environmental concerns in Russia, Estonia and Hungary, along with a substantially weaker concern in Hungary. There also seems to be a marked variation between districts. It has also been possible to identify a variation in the centrality of green movements to the period of crisis in different countries.
