The politics of the Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act

Article Abstract:

The Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act 1995 was presented by the Bangladeshi authorities as giving a legal framework to wide-reaching environmental management. However, it can be argued that, in practice, this legislation has not reflected the promises and enthusiasm of Bangladesh's political leaders. There are some significant barriers to the implementation of the Act, including a lack of functional coordination among the agencies responsible for environmental protection.

Comparing the local use of environmental policy instruments in Nordic and Baltic countries - the issue of diffuse water pollution

Article Abstract:

Voluntary economic measures to reduce diffuse source water pollution in forest and farming areas of Nordic and Baltic countries have been more effective than statutory ones because they provide financial reward to scheme participants. Environmental regulations to cut nitrogen and phosphorus levels in water in the regions have not normally enforced. Political measures to determine an effective environmental strategy on water pollution are almost certain to involve conflict.

The international financing of environmental protection: lessons from efforts to protect the river Rhine against chloride pollution

Article Abstract:

The chloride pollution of the river Rhine is a case where international financing of environmental protection is inefficient for solving transboundary environmental problems. The major obstacle to the effort has been the high transaction costs of negotiating exchanges of international funding among the four countries involved, consisting of France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
