Daring to compete

Article Abstract:

The Deming Prize in Japan has represented product excellence for 40 years. Named after American statistician Edward Deming, the prize stresses total quality control of products based on statistical analysis, a path also preferred by Florida Power and Light (FP&L) CEO Marshall McDonald. FP&L will most likely be the first non-Japanese winner of the 1989 Deming Prize. Competition for the prize demands tremendous efforts from contestants, and victors maintain their rigorous review standards long after the award is won. Detractors of the award have called the process too rigid and inhibiting to true creativity.

The regrettable silence of Paul Elmer More

Article Abstract:

Author Paul Elmer More regarded himself as the most hated and least popular writer in the country. Most of the articles written about More after his death focused on his standing and progress in the humanist movement in the 1930s. Even though the articles discussed his literary works, they failed to generate significant readership interest. However, a closer analysis of More's works reveals topics that may serve as a conservative awakening of sort in the literary world.

Is seeing believing? Occam's disposable razor

Article Abstract:

Occam's razor, which was a philosophical theory about superfluity in the universe, has been misunderstood by many and thought to be a scientific observation. Simplicity and parsimony theories about unseen entities are discussed.
