The road to Littleton

Article Abstract:

Many commentators have sought to evaluate the state of US society in the light of frequent violent incidents. In many cases, what is said lacks moral centrality and is based on the views of social engineers and behaviourists who often reject any spiritual perspective. US society is now placing its faith in the things of the world, making these into a replacement religion. It is now time to recognize that social and political disorder has its origins in moral and spiritual disorder.

Moral warfare in Joseph Conrad's Victory

Article Abstract:

Joseph Conrad's Victory asks whether a man of moral sensitivity can function in a corrupt and derelict world, through the character of Axel Heyst. The novel presents multiplying tensions with regard to space and time, as Heyst struggles to withdraw from the influence of his late father, through his distant travels. There is an attempt at religious imagery through Heyst's Christlike aspects, although no specifically theological statement or claim is made.

Life in Babeldom

Article Abstract:

There seems to have been a decline in literary standards, with many books having on temporary appeal as they are strongly influenced by passing trends. On a wider scale, society is abandoning basic moral and ethical values, with people no longer being attached to civilizing disciplines such as faith and history.
