U.S., Russia inch forward on European security issues

Article Abstract:

The US-Russian meeting on European security in the post cold war era did not make much headway and both the parties made conciliatory gestures on the issue of Russia's involvement in NATO's Partnership for Peace and the scope of the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty. The joint statement on European security at the end of the summit did not make any mention of the CFE treaty and NATO. It, however, mentioned that the leaders are agreed that the basis of a durable peace must be the integration of European nations into mutually supporting institutions.

1994 UN arms register reflects regime's limits

Article Abstract:

The UN Register of Conventional Arms' 1994 report reveals that the effort, intended to highlight arms transfers, continues to face obstacles such as limited participation and discrepancies in the figures reported by importers and exporters. The register is a voluntary program begun in 1992. Participating states are asked to provide information on transfers of major categories of conventional weapons including tanks, heavy artillery, combat aircraft and missile systems.

The Dec 1994 Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) held at Budapest reflected the security concerns of all member countries.
