Violent valleys

Article Abstract:

The growing desire to return to the origins of a 'true faith' and the need of the younger generation to assert themselves over their fathers and grandfathers have made young Central Asians living in the Ferghana valley, where borders of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan meet, turn the religion of Islamism into a component of generational conflict. Repression, confusion and a power vacuum have offered fertile ground for the young to look for alternative sources of moral underpinning and they are turning more and more towards achievement of the same.

In search of enthusiasts

Russia's future challenge lies in developing democratic institutions and overcoming the public's distrust of government's ability to address the needs its people. The crisis in Kosovo and increased economic downturn may provide the impetus for a revolution in values, heightened political consciousness and dynamic leadership.
