Vlad the mighty

Article Abstract:

Three years after being elected President of Russia, Vladimir Putin is steering the country through another international crisis - the conflict between new 'strategic partner' the US and its former client-state Iraq. It is suggested that Putin is managing this with more policy control and political authority than any Russian or Soviet leader since Joseph Stalin. Putin's abilities are examined in attempt to ascertain how he is managing this and how he is managing to follow in the not inconsiderable footsteps of former Russian leaders such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Nikita Krushchev and Leonid Brezhnev.

Precarious respectability

Article Abstract:

Americans are demanding for Russia to be expelled from the G8 or at least lose the hosting rights for the year 2006 summit, but Russia's expulsion or suspension from the G8 is highly improbable. Russia's forthcoming G8 chairmanship hostage could only have negative consequences and it would strengthen the hand of conservative elements in the Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration and weaken Russia.
