What is democratic consolidation?

Article Abstract:

The introduction of global democratization during the past quarter-century has transformed over 60 countries worldwide from authoritarian rule to a democratic regime. Democratic consolidation is presented as a tool to secure new democracies and protect them against the threat of authoritarian regression. However, several problems caused by democratic consolidation have surfaced. These include the diffusion of democratic values, civilian supremacy over military rule, party building and the decentralization of state power.

Guatemala's postwar prospects

Article Abstract:

The end of the civil war in Guatemala has raised questions on the prospects of the nation in attaining democratic stability. The consolidation of democracy in the government requires an analysis of the the nation's political structures and institutional roles, where reforms play an integral role in the efforts towards effective governance. Democratization requires the concerted cooperative efforts of both civilian and military leaders and their willingness to compromise on issues that may arise from the process.
