Adolescent girls' constructions of smoking identities: implications for health promotion

Article Abstract:

Adolescent girls' construction of nonsmoking and smoking identities in terms of group membership has important implications for health promotion and intervention techniques. The smoker identity is rated high on the fun-loving scale, and the nonsmoker identity is rated high on the mature and sensible scales. Regular smokers perceive smoking as an important means to develop an adult social identity. Occasional smokers are the most difficult to identify and offer the greatest scope for interventions. The features of different smoking identities and the effective intervention strategies are discussed.

Starting smoking: girls' explanation of the influence of peers

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted with pupils in six secondary schools to determine factors about smoking: how old they were, where they got the cigarette from, where it occurred, who was there and how much persuasion was involved. Boys smoked at a younger age but the other factors were similar for both boys and girls. More teenage girls smoke than boys and this is because girls perceive smoking as exciting and rebellious. It will be hard to provide regular smokers with an alternative activity or image which affords them the same status.

Perception of discrimination and ethnocultural variables in a diverse group of adolescents

Article Abstract:

The attitudes of adolescents towards out-groups and the relation between ethnic identity components and discrimination were analysed using a social identity theory framework, with a greater sense of ethnic affirmation found to be related to more positive attitudes towards other groups. The positive sense of ethnic affirmation was indirectly associated with discrimination via attitudes towards out-groups. Positive race relations could be generated by the individuals' positive evaluation of their own ethnic group.
