Annual Karen Horney Memorial Lecture: violence, the malignancy of our times! Is there hope?

Article Abstract:

Elissa P. Benedek believes violence has three components: a victim, a victimizer and a societal attitude conducive to violence such as in the US where violence pervades vocabulary. She condemns the belief that violence is related to economic status, relating higher violence rates in poor areas to higher stresses. Benedek wishes that genetic violence research had not been abandoned because of potential racial discrimination since she believes there is much to learn. Benedek believes that a cure for violence is possible but requires motivation, dedication and innovation.
